A Milwaukee woman has admitted to “accidentally” shooting her 2-year-old daughter dead after initially offering several misleading accounts about the murder, including blaming her own 3-year-old son for it.

The incident happened last Tuesday, July 21, when witnesses heard gunshots and saw Jasmine Daniels, 22, running outside with her daughter, Zymeiia Stevens, who was shot.

First responders were called to the home and witnesses helped perform CPR on the child. Paramedics arrived and performed life-saving measures, but the child died on the way to the Children’s Wisconsin hospital.

An autopsy revealed that the 2-year-old girl suffered four gunshot wounds caused by a single bullet, with the Milwaukee County Medical Examiner ruling the death as homicide, Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reported.

A witness reportedly told the police that a black man was seen exiting the residence after the shooting with a gun in his waistband before driving off in a silver, four-door car.

Daniels, during a police interrogation at the hospital on that night, told that Stevens and her unnamed 3-year-old boy were in the basement. She said she rushed there after hearing "three to four" gunshots and her daughter's screams, WITI reported.

In a follow-up interview, she said she was present in the basement with the two children and the gun, which she owned for protection, was lying on a table there. She said she shifted her attention for about two minutes when she heard the gunshots, and looked back to find the 3-year-old crying and 2-year-old bleeding. Daniels said, "He didn’t mean to do it."

Daniels was arrested Sunday, July 26, on first-degree reckless homicide charge against a $100,000 bond. Her initial court appearance was scheduled for Aug. 2. Wisconsin online court records show Daniels had no criminal history.

When a detective asked for Daniels’ consent to search for the gun in her residence, she refused and said that won’t be located inside the residence.
