Mindy Kaling Has Met With Marvel Studios About 'Ms. Marvel'

Writer and actress Mindy Kaling confirmed recently that she has had discussions with Marvel Studios about helping to bring Ms. Marvel to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Speaking with MTV News during the press tour for her latest film, “Late Night,” which she wrote and stars in alongside Emma Thompson, Kaling spoke about her enthusiasm for the role and the mutual desire from Marvel Studios to bring the character to life.

Created by Sana Amanat, G. Willow Wilson, and Adrian Alphona in 2013, Kamala Khan, Carol Danvers’s successor as Ms. Marvel, is a Pakistani-American 16-year-old from New Jersey, and Marvel Comics' first Muslim character to headline their own book. Khan idolizes Danvers and borrows the character’s old moniker when her own powers are awakened thanks to her latent Inhuman genes.

"I think the people I've spoken to [at] Marvel about it are so excited about the character, and I think that they're trying to figure out what to do with it, and I told them I would help in any way because I truly love her," Kaling told MTV News’s Josh Horowitz. "But they seemed really interested, and I think they will probably do something."

Kaling further speculated that with Disney+ on the horizon, featuring a variety of Marvel Studios original content, Ms. Marvel’s live-action debut may happen there as opposed to the big screen.

"Now that there's, like, this streaming platform with them, it might be something like that, but I think they understand how much there is... the excitement, you know," Kaling said. "Riz [Ahmed], me, every different Desi actor was very excited."

“Captain Marvel” star Brie Larson has in the past expressed a desire for Khan to be featured in a potential sequel. “Blockers” breakout star Geraldine Viswanathan has also welcomed the chance to play the character.

“Late Night” is currently in limited release in North America, and will debut nationwide on June 14.
