Mindy McCready: Country Singer and Five-Year-Old Son Reported Missing
Florida authorities have filed a missing persons report for country music singer Mindy McCready and her five-year-old son Tuesday in what appears to be dispute over custody of the child.
The Department of Children and Families reported them missing on Tuesday after McCready took her son Zander from her parents' home and disappeared. McCready, 36, doesn't have custody of her son, but is allowed to visit him at her father's Cape Coral, Fla. home, where she was last seen picking up the boy.
Spokesperson Terry Field told the Associated Press the Department of Children and Families has made a request for an emergency pickup order. A Lee County judge also ordered McCready has until Thursday at 5 p.m. to return the boy or else an arrest warrant would be issued.
Cape Coral police say there's been no criminal act, though McCready's response would suggest otherwise. On Tuesday, McCready posted a Facebook message, which has since been deleted, making it apparent she is in a dispute over custody of her son, according to People magazine.
My son is not missing, McCready wrote. Police established that this afternoon via Skype. I have been fighting the Florida court system to protect my son, and bring him home. Please do not worry.
McCready has had her share of controversies over the years since releasing a number of best-selling country music albums in the late-1990's. Battling domestic abuse and drug addiction, McCready was arrested several times for DUI and has attempted suicide.
In 2004, she was arrested for faking prescriptions followed by arrests for DUI in 2005.
In 2005, her former boyfriend Bill McKnight was arrested for domestic violence against McCready. Shortly after, McCready was found unconscious in a Florida hotel room, after an apparent suicide attempt by drug overdose. The same year, McCready became pregnant with McKnight's child and attempted suicide again with an antidepressant overdose.
Zander was born in 2006 and McCready did not stay out of the limelight after the birth of her son; McCready told the New York Daily News in 2008 about an alleged affair with baseball star Roger Clemens when she was a teen.
She was charged with battery in 2007 for a fight with her mother. McCready attempted suicide again in late 2008, where she was found with slits on her wrists.
A sex tape featuring McCready hit the shelves in 2010 right before she was hospitalized for another drug overdose. The same year, she released her fifth and latest album, I'm Still Here.
McCready appeared on Celebrity Rehab 3 with Dr. Drew Pinsky in 2010, where it became clear her lifestyle had caught up with her; After suffering a seizure, a catscan showed brain damage.
It is a giant whirlwind of chaos all the time, she told the Associated Press in 2010 about her life. I call my life a beautiful mess and organized chaos. It's just always been like that. My entire life, things have been attracted to me and vice versa that turn into chaotic nightmares or I create the chaos myself. I think that's really the life of a celebrity, of a big, huge, giant personality.
Mindy McCready has until 5 p.m. on Thursday to return her son to her parents' home.
