A minor girl in India was rescued after she was sexually abused by her mother’s lover and was forced to sell her eggs multiple times over the past five years.

The horrific ordeal came to light after the unidentified 16-year-old girl from Erode, a city in the southern Indian state of Tamil Nadu, approached the police after fleeing her home.

The teen girl complained that she was sexually exploited by her mother's lover from the age of 12 and she was forced to sell her ovum eight times to private fertility clinics since, 2017. The victim said her mother was given around $260 each time she sold her eggs, Free Press Journal reported.

The police arrested the teen's mother Indrirani, 38, her lover Syed Ali, 40, and an agent Malathi who helped them in the illegal ovum trade. Malathi allegedly received a commission of $64 for each sale, police said.

An investigation revealed that although the girl was a minor, she was allowed to donate eggs at the clinics after her mother forged a fake identity card showing she was an adult with the help of a fourth suspect, identified as John. John was taken into custody on charges of tampering with evidence, ABP Live reported.

The victim was taken into the care of a government facility while the officials said they would be visiting the clinics based on her statements for further inquiries.

"We have taken the girl’s statement. Based on what she revealed, we will be visiting hospitals in Erode and other places to take a statement from the staff and initiate further action," A Viswanathan, a senior health official, said.

The officials said they would also initiate strict actions against the fertility clinics, including the cancellation of their licenses if they were found guilty of the illegal extraction of the ovum.

Last month, the officials in India registered a case against eight people including several minors for kidnapping and raping a 13-year-old girl from the capital city of Delhi. The police arrested four suspects who have confessed to the crime while they are searching for the remaining suspects.
