MLB News: Long-Awaited Top Prospect To Help Mariners End Playoff Drought
KEY POINTS
- Jarred Kelenic was the sixth overall pick back in the 2018 MLB Draft
- Kelenic is set to make his majors debut for the Seattle Mariners
- The Mariners have a 19-year playoff drought
The Seattle Mariners have reportedly called up MLB Pipeline No. 4 prospect Jarred Kelenic, finally looking to make his years-long anticipated debut in the majors a reality.
The Mariners (18-17) are determined to end a 19-year playoff drought, the longest post-season dry spell in any of the four major North American professional leagues.
The Mariners have gone 7-11 after a respectable start to the season. Kelenic, a sought-after figure for the Mariners fanbase, could inject more energy into the current campaign.
The 21-year-old outfielder recently just made his Triple-A debut for Tacoma, wherein he impressed with two home runs and a .444 batting average across four games.
As noted by MLB.com's Daniel Kramer, Kelenic is considered the centerpiece of general manager Jerry Dipoto's long-term rebuilding project, which is considered to be on the right track.
In a report last February, Dipoto mentioned that he has "laid out a plan" for Kelenic, contrary to how the outfielder felt about Seattle keeping him off its major league lineup.
"Our primary concern with all of our players is developing to the best of our ability. We've laid out a plan for Jarred, we've been very transparent in sharing that with him along the way," dipoto said, per CBC Sports.
Then frustrated, Kelenic also voiced out that he could have helped the Mariners enter the playoffs last season.
The Mariners are also expected to add several more key pieces in the years to come to fortify their roster even further in a bid to finally end playoff futility and become a contender.
Fans can look forward to Kelenic playing on Thursday when the Mariners host a four-game series against the Cleveland Indians.
The Mariners then face the Detroit Tigers for three games to close out the seven-game homestand.
The sixth overall pick of the 2018 draft by the New York Mets, Kelenic will now how have a chance to prove he can indeed turn the Mariners' fortunes around.
