  • Mancini undergoes successful surgery for tumor on colon
  • No time frame given on when Mancini can return
  • Orioles throwing full support behind Mancini

Trey Mancini of the Baltimore Orioles reportedly underwent surgery Thursday to remove a cancerous tumor from his colon. The 27-year-old left the team last weekend and the reason behind it was not disclosed.

It turns out that doctors discovered a tumor during a colonoscopy procedure and was set to undergo surgery. Per team officials, the procedure was a success. However, there was no given timetable on when "Boomer" would be ready to return to MLB action, TMZ Sports reported.

To show his appreciation to well-wishers, Mancini released a statement after his operation. He acknowledged the outpouring of love and support and said that all this has made him excited to get back on his feet and playing the game he loves.

"The outpouring of love and support I have received has made an extremely tough week so much better. I have the best family, friends, fans, and teammates imaginable," Mancini said.

Mancini established himself as one of the MLB's best power hitters. He has also been a key player for the Orioles the past seasons. He had 35 home runs in 2019 and owns a career .276 batting average. Baltimore is confident that the first baseman will make a successful return to the MLB and are throwing their support to make sure Mancini makes a full recovery.

"We are doing everything in our power to ensure Trey recovers fully," Orioles GM Mike Elias said. "And we can't wait to see him back on the field as soon as possible."

Mancini has been out of the MLB picture since Mar. 7. Manager Brandon Hyde initially said that the outfielder would undergo a non-baseball medical procedure which turned out to be a tumor on his colon, the Baltimore Sun reported.

Word on the successful surgery of Mancini comes not long after the MLB announced it was canceling the remaining spring training games. This also means that the season-opening will be delayed by at least two weeks. The 2020-21 MLB season was originally slated to open on Mar. 26.

The delay could be a bit of good news for Mancini who is expected to be out for the time being. The MLB is just one of multiple sports leagues who have been forced to suspend or delay their respective tournaments due to the growing issues caused by the coronavirus pandemic.
