MLB Rumors: Bauer Confirms Holding Talks With Blue Jays
KEY POINTS
- Trevor Bauer reveals being in talks with the Toronto Blue Jays
- Bauer is keenly figuring out his next destination
- The Blue Jays are bent on improving team for next MLB season
Trevor Bauer has yet to figure out where he will play next MLB season although it appears at least one team has touched base with him.
The Toronto Blue Jays are one of several teams linked to the 29-year-old pitcher, and Bauer admits that he has had conversations with the franchise.
On Twitter, Bauer revealed l that he had a call with the Blue Jays. He had a chat with Toronto’s pitching and high-performance coach as both explored options.
From there, the former 2020 NL Cy Young winner did not elaborate further and just said that he was moving forward.
Bauer is one of several free agents who are expected to sign up with new teams next MLB season. Aside from the All-Star pitcher, another name currently available is Corey Kluber.
Like Bauer, Kluber has drawn interest from several clubs. That includes the Boston Red Sox and the Cleveland Indians. However, some squads are wary and concerned about the durability of the 34-year-old veteran.
Kluber missed nearly the entire 2020 season with the Texas Rangers due to a shoulder injury. Before that, the three-time All-Star suffered a broken right forearm in 2019. He's made only eight starts over the last two seasons.
As for Bauer, a formal offer has yet to be made. But if there is any clarity to be made on his demands, he refuted a claim by Jon Heyman of the MLB Network that he wanted a five or six-year deal worth between $36 million to $40 million in annual salary.
"Jon, thank god for you. I'm learning so much about my free agency from your tweets! Keep the, coming! Also @AgentRachelLuba is her twitter tag in case you want to tag her next time," Bauer stated.
Joining the Blue Jays makes sense for Bauer. Toronto needs a starting pitcher after finishing last season ranked 17th in ERA (4.55) and 23rd in FanGraphs wins above replacement (2.6).
Toronto managed to finish third in the AL East with a 32-28 record despite this hole. They managed to make the postseason but got swept in the Wild Card Round by the Tampa Bay Rays.
The Blue Jays have their sights on several top free agents, a move to hopefully improve on their performance last season. Bauer could be one of them if both sides can make ends meet.
