MLB Rumors: Blue Jays, Angels Lead List Of Teams Pursuing All-Star Free-Agent Pitcher

Teams in the MLB continue to scour the free-agent market, and one notable name available is Kevin Gausman.

The 30-year-old is coming off a fine season with the San Francisco Giants, and several teams are now believed to be after his signature.

According to Jon Heyman of the MLB Network, the Toronto Blue Jays, Los Angeles Angels, Seattle Mariners and Giants have expressed interest in the All-Star pitcher.

Returning to the Giants would make sense for Gausman although his capacity is in question.

San Francisco inked new deals with a couple of pitchers from last season in Anthony DeSclafani and Alex Wood.

Both got multi-year deals, casting some doubt on the 30-year-old’s relevance and role for San Francisco.

The Los Angeles Angels may also not make sense for Gausman. They have already signed Noah Syndergaard last week to a one-year deal but want to stock up on backup pitchers.

In a previous post, the Angels added Aaron Loup to the mix. The 33-year-old was signed to a two-year deal worth $17 million with a club option for 2024 at $7.5 million and a $2 million buyout.

His chances of getting an important role in Seattle do not look promising as well.

The Mariners are looking for another guy to fill the void of the rotation that involves Marco Gonzales, Logan Gilbert and Chris Flexen.

Given the situation of the Angels, Giants and Mariners, a logical fit for Gausman would be the Blue Jays.

He could end up being the team’s starting pitcher with Robbie Ray and Steven Matz seeking a huge pay raise.

Considering that he is coming off a good season, it seems fitting that he joins a team that can fully utilize him.

Last MLB season, Gausman finished sixth in National League Cy Young voting after posting a 14-6 record with a 2.81 ERA, 3.00 FIP, and 10.6 K/9 in 192 innings in 33 starts with the Giants.

His brilliance has been noticeable the last two seasons. He has struck out a career-high 11.9 hitters per nine innings in 2020.
