MLB Rumors: Blue Jays Keeping Tabs With Three-Time All-Star's Status
KEY POINTS
- Jose Ramirez prefers to stick it out with the Guardians
- The Blue Jays may be Ramirez's next stop
- The Guardians may want multiple assets to agree to a trade
The Cleveland Guardians have yet to settle any potential contract extension talks with Jose Ramirez as reports reveal that negotiations have stalled.
The Guardians have shown no indication of wanting to part ways with the 29-year-old player.
However, the fact that they have yet to agree on a contract extension could alter all that.
One MLB team that has had its eye on the three-time All-Star is the Toronto Blue Jays.
According to MLB insider Hector Gomez, the Blue Jays are pushing hard, but Ramirez still allegedly prefers to stay in Cleveland despite stalled contract talks.
Unless contract talks between Ramirez and the Guardians progress, there is the growing belief that Cleveland could eventually turn to the trade market, Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic reported.
Even if the Dominican prefers to stay in Cleveland, the fact that contract extension talks have yet to progress hints that the Guardians will end up trading him.
Talks between Ramirez and the Guardians have been on and off in the offseason, Cleveland.com reported.
But there is no telling when negotiations will resume.
Right now, Ramirez has two years of club control remaining. He is earning $12 million annually and is due a $14 million club option in 2023.
Should a trade be in the books, it may take a lot to seal the deal with Ramirez.
Like in the case of Toronto, it would take multiple top prospects for the Guardians to potentially agree to a trade.
The Blue Jays have already dealt a package of youngsters this offseason, acquiring Matt Chapman from the Oakland Athletics for Kevin Smith, Gunnar Hoglund and Kirby Snead.
Hence, another major deal could shake things up for the Blue Jays and alter the MLB team’s system.
But given the fact that Ramirez is a most sought-after star, the effort and gamble of getting the three-time Silver Slugger Award winner could pay off moving forward.
