MLB Rumors: Cubs, Dodgers, Red Sox Vying For Dansby Swanson After Carlos Correa Signing
The star-studded shortstop free-agent class of 2022 is down to one. Dansby Swanson is the top position player left on the market, and he's drawing interest from teams in MLB's biggest markets.
Now that Carlos Correa has reportedly signed a 13-year, $350 million contract with the San Francisco Giants, the shortstop-needy teams are focused on Swanson. The Chicago Cubs and Los Angeles Dodgers are top contenders to sign Swanson, according to the latest MLB rumors. The Minnesota Twins, Boston Red Sox and Atlanta Braves could be in the mix, as well.
The Cubs had been viewed by many as the frontrunners to sign Swanson, and that feeling might have increased with Correa no longer available. Chicago is looking to add an All-Star-caliber hitter for the 2023 season. Swanson made his first All-Star team with the Braves in 2022.
Atlanta could potentially re-sign Swanson, though they might have trouble matching other offers. The 28-year-old's asking price has seemingly gone up considerably in recent weeks, based on what other free agents have received.
Correa's 13-year contract is tied for the longest deal in free-agent history. Shortstops Trea Turner and Xander Bogaerts both landed 11-year contracts, signing for $300 million and $280 million, respectively. Swanson could command a deal worth well north of $200 million.
The Dodgers can afford to pay Swanson after being relatively inactive in free agency. Turner left a hole at shortstop by going to the Philadelphia Phillies, and the Dodgers reportedly weren't in contention to sign Correa.
The Red Sox and Twins also lost shortstops in free agency. The San Diego Padres took the league by surprise when they lured Bogaerts away from Boston with a massive offer. Correa played one season in Minnesota before signing with San Francisco.
Swanson finished 12th in the 2022 NL MVP voting, hitting .277/.329/.447 with 25 home runs. Swanson had 27 homers and a .760 OPS in 2021. He posted a career-high .809 OPS in 2020.
Swanson has only missed two games in the last three seasons.
