  • The Padres reportedly tried to push for a big trade with the Nationals
  • San Diego considered a reunion with Trea Turner
  • The Padres now have to find a way to contend with the Dodgers and Giants

The San Diego Padres know they have to address some roster spots, something they could have done at the 2021 MLB trade deadline last July 30.

It appears they had one big blockbuster trade in mind, but all that went down the drain.

The biggest deal pulled off in the last MLB trade deadline was the one that saw Max Scherzer and Trea Turner move from the Washington Nationals to the Los Angeles Dodgers.

But a report from Jon Heyman of the MLB Network claimed that the Padres attempted to try and pull off a deal for Scherzer and Turner, allegedly more than what Washington closed with the Dodgers.

Washington reportedly never got back to them. Allegedly part of the package was Luis Campusano, but the Nationals likely preferred the package of the Dodgers.

Scherzer and Turner were traded to Los Angeles last July 30 in exchange for a haul that included Josiah Gray, Keibert Ruiz, Gerardo Carrillo, and Donovan Casey, MLB.com reported.

Had those plans gone through, it would have brought Turner back to San Diego.

The Padres selected the Florida native 13th during the 2014 MLB Draft but ended up trading him to the Nationals as part of a three-team trade that involved the Tampa Bay Rays.

However, it may become a bit puzzling why the Padres would want Turner back. They already acquired Adam Frazier from the Pittsburgh Pirates, but the interest may have something to do with the injury to Fernando Tatis Jr.

It appears the Padres were planning to use Turner as insurance until Tatis was good enough to return to action.

“El Nino” suffered another shoulder injury, and an update on his status is expected to come out soon.

Had San Diego been successful in their alleged push, it would have given them a major boost in their quest for the World Series.
