With Freddie Freeman and Kris Bryant coming off the market, Trevor Story is one of the few All-Star-caliber players left in free agency. The shortstop reportedly has several options as teams look to bolster their rosters before the 2022 MLB season.

The Boston Red Sox have emerged as a possible landing spot for Story now that they are officially out of the bidding for Freeman, MLB Network’s Jon Heyman reports. The St. Louis Cardinals, Minnesota Twins and Houston Astros are also viewed as potential options for the shortstop.

The Colorado Rockies are unlikely to re-sign Story. Colorado has unexpectedly given Bryant a seven-year, $182 million deal.

In order to join Boston, Story would have to shift to second base. Red Sox shortstop Xander Bogaerts has won the Silver Slugger award in two of the last three years.

The Red Sox have not landed a big free agent this offseason. The Toronto Blue Jays have been active, trading for third baseman Matt Chapman and signing Kevin Gausman to replace the departing Robbie Ray.

Pitcher Steven Matz has been St. Louis’ one notable free-agent signing. The Cardinals finished 10th in runs scored in the National League last season.

Minnesota traded Josh Donaldson and received Gary Sanchez in a deal with the Yankees. The Twins are coming off a last-place finish in the AL Central.

Story might be a backup option for Houston. The Astros are still trying to re-sign Carlos Correa. There are rumors that the shortstop could ink a short contract with Houston that allows him to re-enter free agency next season.

Story made the All-Star team in 2018 and 2019 before leading the league in stolen bases in 2020. In a down season by Story’s standards, the shortstop hit .251/.329/.471 with 24 home runs in 142 games last year.

In his six-year career, Story is averaging 34 home runs per 162 games.
