Madison Bumgarner and Noah Syndergaard are two of the biggest potential game-changers that have been in trade rumors ahead of the 2019 MLB deadline. The San Francisco Giants are getting offers for the greatest playoff pitcher of his generation. The New York Mets can get a haul of prospects for their flame-throwing right-hander.

Will either pitcher be dealt? That question will be answered in just a few hours when Wednesday’s 4 p.m. EDT deadline finally arrives.

Bumgarner’s availability has seemingly changed multiple times over the last few months. There were rumors that the Giants might trade him in the offseason, but the team decided to hold onto their ace in hopes of contending in the NL West. San Francisco’s slow start to the year made it appear that the free-agent-to-be was a near certainty to be dealt, though that quickly changed when the Giants went on a hot streak after the All-Star break.

Just a few games out of the wild-card race, the Giants are reportedly likely to hold onto Bumgarner. It wouldn’t be at all shocking if he gets moved. Trade rumors involving Bumgarner have picked up within the last 24 hours with the Houston Astros reportedly inquiring about the veteran.

The New York Yankees have been linked to Bumgarner. The team would much rather acquire Syndergaard, who is younger and won’t be a free agent until after the 2021 season.

With Trevor Bauer going to the Cincinnati Reds and the Mets trading for Marcus Stroman, the Yankees are running out of ways to significantly improve their rotation. Syndergaard is arguably better than any starter the Yankees have and the team desperately needs to add a pitcher that can be trusted to take the mound in the postseason.

Maybe if the Yankees played in another city their offer of prospects would intrigue the Mets. It’s highly unlikely that the Mets will send Syndergaard to the Bronx, where he could potentially win the World Series in just a few months.

The Astros are reportedly interested in Syndergaard. The San Diego Padres have had on-and-off discussions about trading for Syndergaard for months.

Syndergaard told reporters after his start Tuesday night—he gave up no earned runs in 7.1 innings for a fourth consecutive quality start—that he doesn’t think he’ll be traded. MLB insiders seem to agree.

The Mets are five games out of the wild-card race. New York is unlikely to compete for a playoff spot in 2019, but the organization hopes that adding Stroman to a rotation headlined by Syndergaard and Jacob deGrom could make them contenders in 2020.

The Mets might end up trading starter Zack Wheeler and closer Edwin Diaz.
