KEY POINTS

  • Carlos Rodon and the San Francisco Giants are in agreement on a two-year deal, a report says
  • The contract reportedly includes the right to opt out after the first year
  • Kris Bryant is possibly headed to the Phillies if Bryce Harper pushes for his signing

With the MLB lockout finally ending, a frenzied race for free agents looking for a new home is expected.

The San Francisco Giants wasted no time snagging a free agent in All-Star left-hander Carlos Rodon, who agreed to a two-year, $44 million contract with the team, USA Today reported, citing an unnamed source with knowledge of the deal. The insider spoke on the condition of anonymity because the deal has not yet been announced by the Giants.

Rodon's new deal will see him earn $21.5 million in 2022 and $22.5 million in 2023, according to the outlet. His new contract reportedly includes the right to opt out after the first year.

With the Chicago White Sox, the 29-year-old pitcher had a 2.37 ERA in 24 starts last season. Rodon also finished fifth in AL Cy Young voting and earned his first career All-Star nod.

One possible point of concern for Rodon, however, is that he has not been spared from the injury bug. It is something he has had to deal with in recent years and the reason why he made just 43 appearances with a 4.45 ERA from 2017 to 2020.

Meanwhile, the Giants also managed to bring back Anthony DeSclafani on a three-year, $36 million deal, USA Today reported. Alex Wood reportedly also signed to a two-year contract worth $25 million before the MLB lockout began.

There is also Alex Cobb, whom San Francisco inked to a two-year deal in November 2021.

Kris Bryant is another free agent for the Giants. After being acquired from the Chicago Cubs during the trade window, it remains to be seen if he will remain in San Francisco.

Bryce Harper is trying to lure Bryant to Philadelphia, Jon Heyman of the MLB Network reported.

It could be an option for Bryant, who is expected to get his share of offers despite his injuries.

However, Harper could play a key role in wooing Bryant to the Phillies, possibly in the same way that he pushed for J.T. Realmuto in 2020, according to the Bleacher Report.
