KEY POINTS

  • The Yankees inquire about Matt Olson of the Athletics, but formal talks have yet to happen
  • The Athletics are expected to unload Olson as the club will undergo a roster rebuild
  • The Yankees will have to give up one or more players to acquire Olson

The New York Yankees are expected to fill in key positions this MLB offseason, and one potential target for them could be Matt Olson of the Oakland Athletics.

New York has reportedly made inquiries on the All-Star player, but formal talks have not yet started between the two sides according to analyst Jack Curry.

With Bob Melvin leaving the Athletics to take a managerial job with the San Diego Padres in the offseason, it hints that a change in the roster may be coming next.

If a changeup does happen, Olson has been identified by Andy Martino of SNY as one of the players who could be potentially moved.

However, the Yankees would want to know first what Oakland would want in return for the two-time Golden Glove awardee.

Olson is coming off a good season where he hit .271/.371/.540 with 35 doubles, 39 homers, 111 RBI, and a 5.8 bWAR in 156 games.

These were career-best numbers for the 27-year-old and reasons why he was named to his first All-Star team.

Aside from that, Olson was a finalist for both the Gold Glove and Silver Slugger at first base last season.

In 2021, Olson earned $5 million. He is arbitration-eligible and can earn up to $12 million in the 2022 season. He is also arbitration-eligible in 2023.

If the Yankees push for Olson, they would need to give up some assets to make it work.

While nothing has been made official, part of a package for the All-Star slugger may include someone from among highly-touted prospects in outfielder Jasson Dominguez as well as shortstops Anthony Volpe and Oswald Peraza.

As of this writing, that all depends on what fancies the Athletics the most.

That may only get some clarity once and if the Yankees and the Athletics officially start discussions.
