MMA News: Filipino UFC Vet Takes Aim At BRAVE CF Lightweight Contender
KEY POINTS
- Rolando Dy calls out Sam Patterson after the latter's victory at BRAVE CF 55
- Patterson called Dy a "journeyman" in November of last year, prompting the rivalry
- The Filipino says he would like to fight Patterson to have a better shot at fighting for the lightweight title
Rolando Dy is someone who is not afraid to share what is on his mind, which has prompted him to call out England’s rising star Sam “The Future” Patterson.
The Filipino decided to call out Patterson after the latter’s impressive victory at BRAVE CF 55 last November 6, telling promotion president Mohammed Shahid that they should have the Englishman face him first before giving him a shot at the lightweight title.
After making these comments, Dy dissected what he observed in Patterson’s second-round submission victory via guillotine over Kamil Magomedov.
“[Kamil] Magomedov was afraid of getting punched in the face like most BJJ guys. He is a good kicker, but he panics for doubles in striking exchanges. That’s the reason he got choked. Magomedov is not a wrestler by default because he is a BJJ guy,” he elaborated.
Patterson and Dy have had a shared history with each other, but it was the Englishman who called out Dy first, labeling him as a “journeyman” in November of last year.
In a weird twist of fate, the fighter from Cavite, Philippines filled in for the Englishman in his scheduled bout with New Zealand’s John Brewin at BRAVE CF 44, picking up the unanimous decision victory.
His bid for a title shot was sidetracked after losing an all-out war against Kyrgyzstan mauler Abdisalam Kubanychbek at BRAVE CF 47: Domination this past March.
On the other hand, Patterson improved his shot at the lightweight title held by rival Ahmed Amir by extending his win streak to four under the Bahrain-based promotion.
While Dy believes that Kubanychbek should have first dibs at Amir’s title, he would not mind cutting in line by fighting Patterson.
“I fought the rightful contender, Abdisalam [Kubanychbek], who is not in the title picture now. I know I can take on Sam [Patterson]. Let me steal the title shot from him,” Dy stated.
