  • Former UFC heavyweight champion Cain Velasquez has been arrested for attempted murder
  • Velasquez was reportedly going after a man who had abused a child in his family
  • Fellow MMA fighter Jake Shields also spoke out regarding the situation

Mixed martial arts (MMA) fans have not heard from former UFC heavyweight champion Cain Velasquez in recent months, but he could be going to jail following a shooting incident in San Jose, California.

The San Jose Police Media Relations Twitter account revealed that a man was shot “at least once” and was transported to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, while the suspect was already in their custody.

It was revealed a few hours later that the shooter was in fact the 39-year-old Velasquez and was booked Santa Clara County’s main jail for attempted murder without bail, according to jail records.

Details regarding Velasquez’s motives for shooting the victim remain blurry, but a new report has since emerged.

According to the sources of NBC Bay Area’s Damian Trujillo, Velasquez targeted a man who was believed to be abusing one of his family members.

Trujillo later added that local police arrested a certain 43-year-old by the name of Harry Eugene Goularte last week after being charged with lewd acts with a child, though the man was released with no bonds.

The man that Velasquez shot is rumored to be the father of Goularte, with the retired MMA fighter reportedly firing three shots at the vehicle which contained both men.

Other details regarding the incident have not been released to the public, but that did not stop social media users from speculating on what had happened.

Former UFC welterweight fighter Jake Shields also chimed in on the situation and reposted a tweet made by an unverified source, claiming that he has heard the same rumor and will wait before passing judgment.

Velasquez had retired from MMA back in 2019 following his knockout loss to now reigning heavyweight champion Francis Ngannou.

Following his retirement, “Cardio Cain” took a chance in pro wrestling and was picked up by WWE to be in a storyline with Brock Lesnar, the man he had beat for the UFC heavyweight title in October 2010.

His WWE stint would turn out to be a short one as Velasquez was released by the top-tier pro wrestling company in 2020 due to budget cuts resulting from the COVID-19 pandemic.

Velasquez then returned to the independent wrestling scene with Lucha Libre AAA Worldwide in October of last year.

More details about Velasquez’s arrest are expected to come out in the following days as fans wait to find out what led to his shooting of the two men.
