KEY POINTS

  • Jon Jones could end up not facing the winner of the Ngannou vs. Gane fight at UFC 270
  • Gane is motivated to win the heavyweight title and face Jones next
  • Dana White is unsure if Jones is all-in with his decision to move up to heavyweight

UFC president Dana White weighed in on the future of Jon Jones, a name that has been mentioned as possibly next for the winner of the Francis Ngannou vs. Ciryl Gane title fight at UFC 270 this weekend.

Despite Jones making the full commitment to move up to heavyweight, White threw a word of caution due to Jones' unpredictable nature.

“Not because I think he’s unreliable, it’s because I honestly don’t know what Jon Jones wants to do next. I think Jon’s going to watch this fight, and he’ll decide. Maybe he doesn’t fight at heavyweight," the company head honcho explained to ESPN.

"Maybe he goes back and tries to regain the light heavyweight championship. I honestly don’t know the answer to that question. After everything plays out on Saturday–there’s just so much going into this fight–it’s all part of the drama, though. It’s what makes this weekend so fun," he added.

While White seems to be unsure of what Jones has in mind, the longtime mixed martial arts promoter believes it would be a bad idea for the former UFC light heavyweight titleholder if he decides to be at the Honda Center in Anaheim, California on Saturday, January 22 to watch the showdown live.

“It’d be great for Jon to be here, but I think Jon would probably be better off at home,” White said. “Jon should watch this one at home.”

On the other hand, Gane is laser-focused on beating his former teammate in Ngannou, but he can’t ignore the possibilities of what happens next if he becomes the undisputed heavyweight champion.

At the top of the Frenchman's list is a possible Octagon encounter opposite Jones.

“This will be a pleasure if I win [at UFC 270] against Francis, [and] yes, I want to fight against Jon Jones,” Gane said at the UFC 270 media day. “This is the next one.”
