Mobile Sports Betting Comes To New York To Start 2022
The wait for online sports betting in New York is finally over. Four mobile sportsbooks will be allowed to officially go live on Saturday at 9 a.m. ET.
“The NYS Gaming Commission announced today that four licensed Mobile Sports Wagering Operators - Caesars Sportsbook, DraftKings, FanDuel, and Rush Street Interactive – have satisfied all statutory and regulatory requirements necessary to accept and process mobile sports wagering activity and have been approved to commence operations with launch effective no earlier than Saturday, January 8, 2022 at 9 a.m. Eastern Standard Time,” the New York State Gaming Commission said in a statement Thursday.
“After that effective date, each licensee (Caesars Sportsbook, DraftKings, FanDuel, and Rush Street Interactive) will determine when to accept wagers, based upon its business capabilities and readiness.”
In November, the NYS Gaming Commission approved online sports betting licenses for nine operators. PointsBet, Bally Sports, WynnBet, BetMGM and Resorts World are not yet ready to launch, though that could change before February’s Super Bowl.
“The remaining five conditionally licensed Mobile Sports Wagering Operators continue to work towards satisfying statutory and regulatory requirements necessary to launch and will be approved on a rolling basis when requirements are met,” the NYSGC said.
Mobile sports betting has been live in New Jersey for a few years. In November, the state took $1.26 billion in bets and generated a record $114.8 million in revenue.
"New York bettors were going to New Jersey, to Pennsylvania or New England," New York State Sen. Joseph Addabbo, D-Queens, told ESPN. "So, we're asking them to switch from what they were doing, try the New York product and then stay with us. New Yorkers are so savvy when it comes to sports that if we don't have a competitive [sports betting] product that rivals and competes with New Jersey, Pennsylvania or even the illegal market, in a millisecond, they'll go back to what they were doing."
