Meanwhile, Stonestreet plays the role of Cameron Tucker in the hit ABC sitcom “Modern Family.” The show is going on its ninth season this fall. In 2015, the Kansas native opened up to the Huffington Post Live about what it’s like playing the role of a gay character on television. “I was worried from the beginning that I was going to be part of a gay bashing of sorts,” he said.
But Cam and his partner, Mitchell (Jesse Tyler Ferguson), have received nothing but love from their fans. In fact, Stonestreet has also become active in communities that promote equality ever since he was asked to play Cam in “Modern Family.” “I’m just more active in that community and I feel a little bit more responsible for people’s words and actions,” he said.
In 2016, Stonestreet also spoke with Chris Stigall on Talk Radio 1210 about the fans’ reactions to Cam and Mitchell. “Read my fan mail, read my tweets where people relate to Jesse and I and thank us for bringing our character to tv and giving bullies a place to go or making it easier to come out to their parents and their parents being more accepting of them. People are critical. We can’t represent every sort of person in the gay community just like a straight actor in movie can’t represent every type of straight guy. We can only play the characters that are given, that are created on the page and the words that we do, and hopefully, we do that as truthfully and as honest as we can,” he said.
