A mother and her boyfriend have been arrested in India for allegedly murdering the woman’s 4-year-old daughter and dumping her body in a forest.

The incident happened in the northern Indian state of Rajasthan in December 2020 but only came to light Friday after the police arrested the two suspects.

The mother, identified as Teena, 25, and her boyfriend, Prahlad Sahay, 45, were arrested for allegedly murdering the woman's 4-year-old daughter Nandini, police said Saturday.

The couple was produced before court Saturday and remains under police custody, the Times of India reported.

The police started the investigation in December 2020 after Teena’s husband Sumit Ahir filed a complaint stating that his wife, along with their minor daughter, was missing. After almost five months since the missing case was filed, the police found the woman Friday from a rural area in Jaipur, a city in Rajasthan.

Teena initially told the police that her daughter is living with her maternal grandparents. On further interrogation, she admitted that she had strangled her daughter to death on Dec. 9, 2020, and dumped her body in a forested area.

The investigators found out that Teena had left her husband’s home along with the child and had started living with Sahay after starting an affair with him. During her stay with Sahay, the child suffered critical injuries after she accidentally fell off stairs while playing, Times Now News reported.

The girl was taken to a local hospital for treatment but the doctor at the hospital referred her to a specialty center for treatment. Sahay was reportedly not willing to spend money on the child and the duo decided to murder her. The following day, they allegedly strangled the child to death and threw her body in a forest.

In a similar incident last month, a mother murdered her 3-year-old daughter before killing herself. The incident happened in the eastern Indian state of Odisha. The woman’s husband was also found dead in a forest. A preliminary investigation revealed that the couple reportedly had an argument over some issue and it reportedly led to the murder-suicide. The police also recovered a suicide note from the couple’s house blaming the landlord for the three deaths.
