A mother in Brazil has admitted to killing her 5-year-old daughter by gouging out her eyes and cutting off the child's tongue before eating it.

Josimare Gomes da Silva, 30, was arrested for the murder of her daughter, Brenda Carollyne Pereira da Silva. The incident took place at their home in the town of Sao Cristovao in the northeastern state of Alagoas on Sunday.

The child's grandfather came home to find blood gushing out from the outside drain. He immediately broke into the locked bathroom and found Josimare sitting on the floor, praying next to the lifeless body of the child.

"The old man realized that they were both closed in the bathroom, when he called she said he was taking a shower, but it took a while, when he went to look out the back door and saw the blood stains, he broke the door and found the girl dead in the bathroom and the mother praying next to her body," a police officer said as per People En Español. The grandfather noticed that the child's eyes had been gouged out and her tongue had been cut off. He immediately called the police. The responding officers had to sedate Josimare before arresting her, Daily Star reported.

According to the investigators, Josimare used a pair of scissors to gouge out her daughter's eyes and cut off her tongue. They believe that all this happened while the child was still alive.

The child's grandfather also reported to the police that the child's neck had turned purple, which could be an indication that she had been choked.

A preliminary investigation revealed that Josimare had chewed on the child's tongue after cutting it off from the girl's mouth.

Josimare confessed to the horrifying crime during an interrogation. However, her statements were abrupt as she kept mumbling things in various languages including Spanish.

Investigators learned that the mother had a history of mental health issues and this incident was a result of her psychotic breakdown.

"Due to the circumstances in which they appeared in the fact, with strong indications that the victim's mother has psychological and psychiatric problems, and that perhaps at the time of the crime she was even in an outbreak," the Public Prosecutor's Office said in a statement.

Kleytione Pereira, the district attorney for Maravilha, has suggested that Josimare must be hospitalized, rather than being sent to prison.

Josimare was being held at a police station as of Tuesday and will be sent to a women's prison in Maceio, the capital city of Alagoas.
