The 24-year-old mother who is facing multiple charges for allegedly throwing her two children out of the window of her second-floor apartment in Brooklyn, New York, this month, was "tired of being by herself," according to a neighbor who witnessed the alleged incident.
Dejhanay Jarrell allegedly tossed her newborn baby daughter and 2-year-old son from the fire escape of her Rockaway Parkway apartment on June 12. She then allegedly jumped herself and continued to harm the baby girl, New York Post reported, citing police and witnesses.
At the time, one neighbor, Carl Chin, rushed to rescue the newborn and take her out of the woman’s arms.
“She grabbed hold of the two kids and proceeded to hurt them more,” Chin told the outlet.
After Chin was able to take away the kids, Jarrell allegedly told him to take care of them. He was also told by the mother that she was “tired of being by herself.”
“She had the baby in her grip, and I had to take the baby out of her grip and hold her until the police and paramedics came,” the neighbor added. “As she was trying to hurt her children, and I was getting them out of her grip, she kind of thanked me and told me to take care of them.”
Others who witnessed the alleged incident, including Chin's sister-in-law, were left devastated and rattled.
Another neighbor, Herman Moultrie, 62, who lives in the building next door to Jarrell’s, told the New York Post that the young mother had been living in the apartment for three months prior to the alleged incident.
“She was a good person, a family mother,” Moultrie said. “She wasn’t hanging out in the streets or anything. I never knew she had problems like this. I’m thinking she was tired of being alone or maybe she was abused.”
On June 12, Jarrell allegedly first hurled the 1-month-old baby girl out the window and then her 2-year-old son, before jumping out after them, New York Daily News earlier reported. The woman then allegedly bashed the baby’s head into the ground. Both children and their mom had no clothes on, the report said.
Both kids survived the fall. The mother and her son were taken to Brookdale Hospital, where she was treated for the spinal fracture that she sustained, police sources told New York Post. The boy suffered a contusion and internal trauma.
However, the state of the baby girl was more serious. She was in critical condition when she was rushed to Maimonides Hospital and had suffered multiple injuries, including a skull fracture, swelling of the brain and renal injuries.
Jarrell was charged with two counts of attempted murder, two counts of assault, two counts of reckless endangerment and acting in a manner dangerous to a child younger than 17 in connection to the incident, police said.
The New York City Administration for Children Services now has custody of Jarrell’s children.
