Monica Lewinsky Talks About Britney Spears: 'I Made a Mistake, Britney Didn't'
Monica Lewinsky has talked about the media treatment Britney Spears received and how it is relatable to her own life.
Lewinsky, who is popularly known for having an affair with then-President Bill Clinton in the mid-'90s and now producing television series "Impeachment: American Crime Story," recalled her painful past.
Lewinsky, 48, in a Q&A with InStyle magazine, noted how people are now being apologetic towards her and Spears after making fun of them for so many years in media.
"I think it's long overdue and wonderful to see it happening for different women in different arenas and scenarios," she told InStyle on Thursday. "I made a mistake. Britney didn't. There were other young women this happened to, and there's an enormous amount of collateral damage."
"So I think it's not just an apology to a person; it's an apology to how you've affected a culture. What is sexual agency? What does it mean? It's not surprising that this de-objectifying of women is happening alongside the #MeToo movement," she said. "They braid together in a way that makes sense."
Lewinsky recalled meeting Spears in the early 2000s when the latter was dating singer Justin Timberlake. She saw Spears entering a brand's store, Henri Bendel, as she was about to leave.
"I had my handbag company at the time, and she said she thought the bags were cute. I was beside myself, so I got her some," she added. "But at that time I wasn't able to have the perspective to recognize, 'Oh, this is happening to other women.'"
Noting that singer Jessica Simpson was also fat-shamed in 2009, she said: "This didn't just happen to me. This is happening now to other people too. Not that that's a good thing."
Last month, Sarah Paulson, who played Linda Tripp -- a civil servant who revealed the affair between Lewinsky and Clinton -- in "Impeachment: American Crime Story," also spoke about her physical appearance in the TV series.
"I think fatphobia is real. I think to pretend otherwise causes further harm," the actress told Los Angeles Times. "And it is a very important conversation to be had."
Season 3 of "Impeachment: American Crime Story" consists of 10 episodes and is slated to premiere on Sept. 7 on the FX network.
