More Than 95,000 Breakthrough COVID-19 Cases Recorded In New York

Health officials in the state of New York have recorded more than 95,000 breakthrough COVID-19 cases since the beginning of the pandemic, according to the latest data.

New York State has reported 95,146 breakthrough COVID-19 infections since the start of the pandemic, accounting for 0.8% of its fully vaccinated population aged 12 and older, according to data published by the Department of Health on Sunday.

The state has also reported 6,567 COVID-19 hospitalizations among fully vaccinated people aged 12 and older. The figure represents 0.06% of all vaccinated people in New York State.

Overall, the state of New York has recorded 2,433,917 COVID-19 infections since the beginning of the pandemic. Of the total number of cases, 5,672 were reported Tuesday, according to the state’s COVID-19 tracker. According to the data, 56,992 people have died from COVID-19 in the state as of now.

The report also noted an analysis from Sept. 13 to Sept. 19 that showed fully vaccinated New Yorkers were between 89.7% and 95.2% less likely to be hospitalized with COVID-19 compared to those who were unvaccinated.

During the same period, fully vaccinated New Yorkers were also 78.6% less likely to be infected with COVID-19. In comparison, vaccinated individuals in the state had a 91.9% lower chance of getting infected with COVID-19 prior to the spread of the more transmissible Delta variant.

Despite the reduced levels of protection, Gov. Kathy Hochul, D-N.Y., still urges New Yorkers to get vaccinated against COVID-19 to curb the spread of the virus.

“The COVID-19 pandemic isn’t over and it’s critical that we continue to make progress getting shots in arms throughout the state to keep New Yorkers healthy and safe,” she said during a press conference Tuesday.

“If you haven’t received your shot and are eligible, it’s vitally important that you get it as soon as possible at one of the many sites located around the state,” she added.

Health officials in New York are currently administering booster COVID-19 vaccine doses to people with compromised immune systems. To be eligible, a New Yorker must have received two doses of vaccine from Pfizer-BioNTech at least six months ago.
