Morissey Denies Defending Kevin Spacey; Der Spiegel Releases His Audio Interview
British singer and songwriter Morrissey was heavily criticized for defending “House of Cards” star Kevin Spacey during his interview with the German publication Der Spiegel.
Morrissey was attacked by netizens because of his views. After the commotion broke out, the singer claimed that Der Spiegel twisted his interview. Because of what they did, he is done granting print interviews.
“A few weeks ago I foolishly allowed Germany’s Der Spiegel into my life," he wrote on his Facebook page. “Since they eagerly flew from beloved Berlin to beloved Los Angeles in order to talk and laugh, I assumed a common understanding.”
Morrissey accused Der Spiegel of failing to “convey my views fairly,” and he added: “Would I ever again speak to print media? No, never.”
In response, Der Spiegel released their audio interview with Morrissey to prove that they are not afraid to show the world the “unchopped, un-fiddled-with” interview.
In the interview, Morrissey said that the entire sexual allegations made against Spacey and Hollywood mogul Harvey Weinstein has become a “theater” for everyone. “Anybody who has ever said to a person, ‘I quite like you,’ suddenly they’re being accused of sexual harassment,” he said.
“There are, of course, extreme cases – and rape is revolting, and any kind of physical attack is revolting – but we must keep it in perspective, otherwise everybody on the planet is guilty of everything,” he continued.
When asked about Spacey, Morrissey said that the revelation made by “Star Trek” star Anthony Rapp should be evaluated since Spacey was 26 while Rapp was 14 when the assault took place in the actor’s hotel room.
“You have to wonder where the boy’s parents were. You have to assume he had an inkling of what might possibly happen. I mean, I don’t know about you but I’ve never been… in my youth I was never in situations like that. Never. And I was always aware of how things could go,” he said. “If you were in somebody’s bedroom you’d have to be aware of where it could lead to and you’d have to say ‘Why are we here? Why aren’t we downstairs on the lobby?’ So it doesn’t ring quite true to me and it seem to me that he has quite unnecessarily attacked.”
