'Mortal Kombat' Movie To Be In 'Avengers' Mode With Multiple Characters
There will be an ensemble of characters to look forward to in the upcoming “Mortal Kombat” movie. The scriptwriter of the movie compared the franchise to the “Avengers” and explained that the fans will get to see all their favorite characters at once.
Long before the first “Avengers” movie was released, Marvel was able to populate the superhero universe with a couple of hit solo movies of the main characters like Iron Man, Thor, and Captain America. However, the “Mortal Kombat” franchise doesn’t have that luxury, so they will be bringing in a large group of the characters from the game on to the big screen with the upcoming film.
In a recent interview with Comic Book, the scriptwriter of the upcoming film Greg Russo said that one of the challenges he had was choosing from the large pool of characters from the game to be included. He pointed out that there are about 70 important characters from the game, and they can’t have solo movies for Sonya and Liu Kang the way Marvel did with its superheroes.
Russo was therefore forced into “Avengers mode” while writing the script of “Mortal Kombat.” What this means is that the fans will get to see a “lot of different characters.” The challenge was to justify the screen time for each character, which the writer tried to solve by looking at which character is more important for the current story and who could play a bigger role in the sequel.
Apart from the large number of characters in the film, what will be exciting for the fans is that the film will have gory fatalities just like the game. Russo previously told Comic Book that the film is R-rated and it will have fatalities that are accurate to the game.
Casting is currently ongoing for the film. Joe Taslim has been confirmed as the actor who will be playing Sub-Zero, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Details about the other characters and cast will be revealed in the coming weeks and months.
“Mortal Kombat” movie will be directed by Simon McQuoid. The film will be released on March 5, 2021.
