Most Notable Moments, Matches From WWE's First UK Show Since 1992
KEY POINTS
- WWE's United Kingdom show delivered across the entire card
- Gunther vs. Sheamus was the fans' undisputed match of the night
- Drew McIntyre failing to defeat Roman Reigns has more to do with the latter's long-term story
WWE made its grand return across the pond in the United Kingdom with Clash at the Castle Saturday and produced one of its best shows in recent memory.
Featuring a seven-match card, fans in Cardiff, Wales, were treated to a great showing from all performers with some happenings worth taking note of.
Hard-Hitting Intercontinental Title Match
The European crowd was not afraid to show its appreciation for the third match of the night in the form of Sheamus challenging Gunther for the Intercontinental Championship.
Fans were expecting to see heavy strikes from both performers, and they gave them exactly what they wanted to see as they sought to showcase their entire arsenal.
Gunther landed thunderous chops across the chest of Sheamus, while the Irishman responded with his own throughout the near 20-minute match.
At the end of it all, Gunther came out victorious and enjoyed the company of his reunited Imperium faction, and Sheamus was treated to a standing ovation for a wonderful performance from the 44-year-old.
The Intercontinental title has been recognized by many in the industry as the "workhorse" title, and both men once again elevated it to another level after putting on what many deemed to be the match of the night.
Liv Morgan's Best Match Yet
SmackDown women's champion Liv Morgan needed to have a strong performance to convince fans that her reign continues swimmingly, and taking on Shayna Baszler appeared to be the best-case scenario for her at Clash at the Castle.
Baszler promised to break the arm of Morgan during their title tiff and came extremely close to doing so as the former mixed martial arts (MMA) fighter targeted the champ's left arm – the one she injured in kayfabe against Ronda Rousey at SummerSlam.
WWE leaned in heavily into Morgan's underdog champion status by having Baszler consistently hit power moves on her while giving the former chances to showcase her selling ability.
While some believed Baszler was going to take the title, Morgan's resiliency shone through when she escaped the Kirifuda Clutch and armbar transition.
The build-up to the match also featured each woman training ahead of their clash. Baszler trained with close friend and former titleholder Rousey, while Morgan sought help from former MMA standout turned fellow WWE superstar Matt Riddle.
WWE choosing to feature the sports side of "sports entertainment" ahead of the match further built its credibility, and many were pleasantly surprised to see Morgan shining through against an established competitor like Baszler.
Dominik Mysterio Goes Heel
The long-awaited result of The Judgment Day's constant attacks on Dominik Mysterio finally had its big payoff at Clash at the Castle after he turned on his father Rey Mysterio and Edge following their win against Finn Balor's faction.
Seeing the younger Mysterio turn heel has been teased for quite a while now, and giving the hot crowd in Europe the privilege to see it happen was a great treat for fans.
There were hints during the pay-per-view match that it would not happen then after the younger Mysterio helped his side get the win, only for Dominik to announce his true intentions.
The turn was further solidified on the Monday episode of Raw as Dominik attacked his father and Edge alongside The Judgment Day.
Going heel does two things for Mysterio's young career: establishing his own name away from his father's storied legacy while working with vets such as Finn Balor, Damian Priest and Rhea Ripley.
With an upcoming feud against his father and Edge, Mysterio can prove that he can carry himself outside of his family name.
Drew McIntyre Not Winning
The lone miss of Clash at the Castle was seeing hometown kid Drew McIntyre fall short of ending Roman Reigns' historic run as the undisputed WWE universal champion.
Having McIntyre's coronation happen in Cardiff would have been the storybook-ending to a show that was great on all fronts, but the long-term story took precedence over the feel-good moment.
NXT superstar and Reigns' real-life cousin Solo Sikoa made his debut on the main roster to interfere in the match, costing McIntyre his crowning glory while Reigns strode out of the Principality Stadium with titles still intact.
The younger brother of the Usos completes the Bloodline faction thanks to his relation to all three members, whom WWE could set up for a possible run at singles gold down the line.
For McIntyre, winning the gold would have made sense after being the most strongly-booked challenger among Reigns' most recent competitors outside of Brock Lesnar and being rumored to be the favorite to take home the titles.
McIntyre is now expected to turn his sights on WWE returnee Karrion Kross after being hunted by him since his comeback.
As for WWE's plans with Reigns, the conclusion to Clash at the Castle poured gasoline into the fire of belief that he will drop the titles at WrestleMania 38 against his cousin The Rock, though fans are hoping it won't be the case.
There is also a theory going around the internet wrestling community that it will be Cody Rhodes who ends the reign, but WWE is playing their cards extremely close to the chest.
All in all, WWE's return to the U.K. was met with generally favorable reviews, and it is already on the road to regaining fans who have fallen out with the company in recent years thanks to its choice of performers.
