Mother Allegedly Attempts To Kill Baby After Giving Birth At Home, Says Newborn Was 'Evil'
A Nevada woman was arrested for allegedly attempting to kill her newborn baby after giving birth to the child at her home, the police said Thursday.
The authorities were reportedly called to the emergency room at Mountain View Hospital in Las Vegas on Saturday. The police wrote in an arrest report they arrived at the hospital to find the baby “bleeding profusely.”
The mother of the newborn, identified as 22-year-old Ashley Hollingsworth, had allegedly tried to kill the child with a blanket, local media KLAS reported. She was charged with suspicion of attempted murder and child abuse, according to the Las Vegas Review-Journal.
Hollingsworth was located more than two hours later with severe injuries to her head. When the police found her, she had bloody pants and a large wound on her head. She told the police she was “beat up by a rock.”
Preliminary investigation revealed Hollingsworth gave birth in a toilet in her house about an hour before the police were called to the hospital. The child’s father told the police the family decided to take them to a hospital because of the baby’s condition.
“It was later learned that Ashley had attempted to kill the baby by smothering her with a blanket while enroute to the hospital,” the police wrote in the arrest report.
A witness told the police the next day that Hollingsworth had reportedly said there was “something evil” in her stomach that was “trying to kill” the baby. Hollingsworth later told the police she believed the baby was “probably evil.”
“After seeing the baby’s eyes, smelling what she described as an abnormal scent, and the baby grunting at her, Ashley decided to wrap the blanket around the baby’s head,” the police wrote in their report.
Hollingsworth had been diagnosed with a medical condition four years ago, the Review-Journal reported, adding the information was redacted in the arrest report. She told the police she was not taking her medication while she was pregnant.
The police also said the injuries on Hollingsworth's face were self-inflicted. Currently, she was being held without bail ahead of a court hearing next week.
