An Atlanta mother has been shot by a police officer after she showed up at her daughter's school with a handgun. She allegedly waved the weapon at students and staff during an after-school fight.

Tierra Vachon, 30, came to Booker T. Washington High School on Wednesday evening with a gun after her daughter was involved in a physical altercation with some other students. Vachon was shot in her hand by the school police officer after she allegedly refused to drop the handgun, Atlanta Public Schools said in a press release, reported People.

Vachon, who suffered a non-life-threatening injury, was treated at the scene and was later taken to Grady Memorial Hospital. No one else was injured in the incident.

The woman's family said she went to the school to defend her daughter and pulled out her gun in self-defense. "It was a teenage fight, and an adult got into it and that's what made my sister feel like she needed to protect her child," Vachon's relative told CBS 46.

The family also claimed that Vachon had put down the gun when the officer requested her. "Her gun didn't go off at all, she did not pull her trigger at all, the only gun that went off was the officer who shot her after she put her gun down when he told her to," the relative added.

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation will also investigate the use of force during the incident.

Vachon was booked into the Fulton County Jail on multiple charges, including obstructing a law enforcement officer with violence, carrying/ possession of a firearm on school property, aggravated assault and contributing to the delinquency of a minor.

The Atlanta school district said the incident is under investigation. "Atlanta Public School (APS) Police and Atlanta Police are conducting a full investigation of the incident, and the parent faces several charges. As this was an officer-involved shooting, the Georgia Bureau of Investigation is investigating as well. The safety and well-being of our students and employees is always a top priority for all Atlanta Public Schools," the school district said.
