A woman in India has been arrested for allegedly beating her 3-year-old son to death while her husband was at work.

The incident took place in Chhipabarod town in Baran, a district in the northern Indian state of Rajasthan. The woman, identified as Gayatri Jatav, was arrested Wednesday after her husband, Anil, filed a police complaint against her, Republic World reported.

Anil, a daily wage worker, found his son lying unconscious when he returned home from work Monday, according to the police complaint obtained by the outlet.

The accused is mentally challenged, police said. Anil, in his complaint, alleged that Gayatri locked her room from inside and thrashed their son. Other members of the family tried to stop the woman, but she paid no heed and continued to beat the child, NDTV reported.

The father said he took the boy to a hospital but the doctors declared him brought dead.

A murder case was registered against Gayatri. The child's remains were handed over to his family Tuesday after an autopsy. Gayatri is set to appear in court on Thursday.

Gayatri was restrained by police twice before for beating her son, Ravinder Singh, a police officer, told Republic World. The couple had been married for six years and had moved to their current location a year ago from a nearby state.

In May last year, a woman in South Africa was taken into custody for beating her 11-month-old baby to death. The 42-year-old mother was accused of beating the infant after locking herself and the child inside a hut. Neighbors, who heard the child's cries, rushed to the house and broke open the door to find the infant with serious injuries. The baby was rushed to a nearby hospital but was declared brought dead.
