A woman in India rubbed chili powder onto her son's eyes as a form of punishment for his marijuana addiction. The incident was caught on camera and the clip has since gone viral.
The woman, identified as Ramanamma from the Suryapet district in the southern Indian state of Telangana, resorted to this punishment after multiple attempts of trying to keep her 15-year-old son away from marijuana proved futile, News 18 reported.
Ramanamma is a daily wage worker and her husband is a rickshaw-puller. The son used to attend school before the pandemic but had dropped out later. He reportedly got addicted to marijuana and refused to give it up despite several warnings.
The teen is said to have returned home in an inebriated state 10 days after going missing, which infuriated his mother, prompting her to tie him to a pole and rub chili powder on his eyes.
The viral video shows the young boy tied to a pole, screaming and crying as he tries to stop his mother while another woman holds him back.

"A mother found out that her 15-yr-old son was becoming ganja addict and came up with unique treatment by tying him to a pole & rubbed Chilli powder in his eyes until he promises to quit," the video's description read.
Spectators in the video were heard asking the woman to pour water on his eyes. She finally agreed to untie the teen on the condition that he will quit smoking weed.
While many parents in rural Telangana are said to resort to rubbing chili powder to punish a child when all else fails, social media users argued the practice is ineffective, Zee News reported, stating that the process can, in fact, be counterproductive.
"This treatment can give negative impact. Best is, friendly with your children and keep eyes on them. Teenage is very critical time. They always think bad friends are best for them and parents are enemy," one user commented.
Ramanamma said that she was fed up with her son's marijuana addiction. The woman added that the local police would often find him lying on road in a drugged state and carry him home, according to Mint. A complaint was launched against the mother after the incident came to light.
