A 33-year-old woman in Russia was arrested for selling her baby boy, who was barely five days old, to pay for a $3,600 rhinoplasty, reports said.

The unidentified woman who gave birth to her son at a hospital in Kaspiysk, a city in the Republic of Dagestan in southern Russia, on April 25, was arrested a month later on suspicion of human trafficking, New York Post reported.

"The suspect met with a local resident and agreed to hand over her newborn son, who was in a state of helplessness, for a reward of 200,000 rubles ($3,200)" Russian officials revealed, as per Newsflash.

In exchange for the child, the new parents reportedly paid an upfront amount of $360 while the mother issued a "waiver for the rights to the child." The investigators believe that the rest of the payment was made on May 26, around four weeks after the child was exchanged.

Based on a tip-off from an unknown person, the couple who allegedly bought the child and the mother were soon taken into custody.

The duo initially denied paying the woman directly in exchange for the baby, but admitted to the investigators that the child's mother later asked for $3,200 to pay for a nose job to help her "breathe better" which they were happy to oblige, American Post reported.

"Currently, a series of investigative actions are being carried out, aimed at establishing all the circumstances of the crime committed and consolidating evidence of the suspect’s guilt," the officials said in a statement.

"She is suspected of having committed an offense under paragraph ‘h’ of Part 2 of Art. 127.1 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation (purchase and sale committed in connection with a person who is in a state of defenselessness, known to the guilty person)," the statement further read.

Although in custody, it is unclear what charges were filed against the couple who allegedly bought the child. Meanwhile, the officials have also not revealed the custody status of the now 2-month-old child.
