KEY POINTS

  • Confirmed COVID-19 cases in the UK is now 6,650
  • Death toll has reached 335
  • Symptoms of COVID-19 to watch out for in children

The grim reality of coronavirus updates showing new cases and deaths has become a daily norm. Rarely has a day passed without the deadly virus taking two or more lives in the UK. Because of this, the government has urged the public to be on the lookout for symptoms and to immediately self-isolate if you experience even the mildest symptom.

As advised by the National Health Service, among the symptoms you need to watch out for are experiencing high temperatures and continuous cough. Other symptoms include having difficulty breathing, the loss of sense of smell, and headaches.

In children, some health experts say their symptoms appear to be much milder. A mother from Cardiff, however, has issued a warning and revealed what signs to look out for in babies.

A Panic-Stricken Mother

Laura Pearson, a resident of Cardiff, Wales, has described her experience after Gruff, her six-month-old baby boy, fell severely ill. It happened after the partner of Laura developed common coronavirus symptoms that include having chills, high temperature, mild cough, and aches.

The highly-infectious virus was somehow transmitted to their son, and soon after, he started to develop his own symptoms. The panic-stricken mom was alerted to the poor health of her baby when he began to develop four typical symptoms of COVID-19.

Her Baby’s Symptoms

In an interview, Ms. Pearson said her baby developed an on-and-off dry cough, but then started to become very hot to touch. The Cardiff mom said she called her doctor because she could not get through on the NHS 111 helpline. Their doctor told them to monitor Gruff’s condition through whenshouldiworry.com, a website built by medical researchers at Cardiff University.

As her son’s temperature hit 39 degrees, however, Ms. Pearson sent out a request to her Facebook friends for new thermometers as they were already wondering if it is broken. This is because of the high numbers their thermometer showed.

More Symptoms Appeared

After this, Ms. Pearson observed that her son, aside from having a high temperature, has developed aches, a mild cough, and chills. She recalled Gruff crying out in pain and has started to become inconsolable. At this point, she called the out-of-hours number of doctors, and they advised the Pearsons to immediately seek medical attention at the hospital.

The Cardiff mom also observed, at this time, that her son was also having bloody diarrhea, which some health experts are now saying is another likely symptom of coronavirus. Gruff was admitted to the Noah’s Ark Children’s Hospital.

The doctor told Ms. Pearson that Gruff had all classic signs of COVID-19 infection and told the parents to go home and look after Gruff. The physician also advised the Pearsons to self-isolate for 14 days. According to Ms. Pearson, the worst seem to be over for both Gruff and her partner.
