A mother and son in the Indian state of Chhattisgarh, who were both suffering from an illness, died of suicide this week due to financial problems, police said.

Krishna Bai Manikpuri, 45, and her son, Ashok Das, 21, were found hanging from the ceiling of a room in their Kalartarai home in Bilaspur district Tuesday, the Times of India reported, citing officer Dinesh Chandra of the Kota police station.

Manikpuri's husband, Prem Das, discovered the two after he peeped through a window with the help of some neighbors, according to the station house officer.

Both Manikpuri and Ashok had not come out of the room, which prompted Prem to take a look, police said.

Prior to their deaths, the mother and son suffered from an undisclosed illness and faced difficulties in repaying a loan, Chandra said.

Manikpuri and Ashok reportedly worked as a maid and a laborer, respectively, while Prem, who has a disability, stayed at home.

No suicide note was found at the scene of the deaths, but it appeared as if the financial troubles and the illness Manikpuri and her son suffered were what led to the suicides, police said.

A case has been registered in connection to the incident, and further investigation is underway, according to Chandra.

In a similar story, a family of four in the state of Kerala died in a suicide pact more than two months ago due to a "financial crisis," police said.

The four — identified as Ashif, 40, his wife Abeera, 35, and the couple's 14- and 7-year-old daughters, Ashara Fathima and Anounissa — were found dead in one of the rooms at their home in the city of Kodungallur on Feb. 20.

Authorities decided to inspect the room after the family failed to come out of it past 10 a.m. that day.

The cause of the suicides was a “financial crisis,” according to a suicide note that was later recovered from the family’s home.

A case was registered, and a probe into the deaths was launched.

Neighbors and relatives of the four were reportedly surprised to know that the family was facing a financial crisis as they considered them rich.

However, the family reportedly received a property attachment notice as they had defaulted on some loan repayments.
