Mother's Day, which is celebrated annually on the second Sunday of May, falls on May 12 this year. It is a day to honor mothers and surprise them with gifts to thank them for everything they have done.

Here are a few of the best sayings to share with your mother, complied from Good Reads and Mothersdaycelebration.com -

  • “Sometimes the strength of motherhood is greater than natural laws.” — Barbara Kingsolver
  • “A mother is the truest friend we have, when trials heavy and sudden fall upon us; when adversity takes the place of prosperity; when friends desert us; when trouble thickens around us, still will she cling to us, and endeavor by her kind precepts and counsels to dissipate the clouds of darkness, and cause peace to return to our hearts.” — Washington Irving
  • “Mothers were meant to love us unconditionally, to understand our moments of stupidity, to reprimand us for lame excuses while yet acknowledging our point of view, to weep over our pain and failures as well as cry at our joy and successes, and to cheer us on despite countless start-overs. Heaven knows, no one else will.” — Richelle E. Goodrich
  • “It’s a funny thing about mothers and fathers. Even when their own child is the most disgusting little blister you could ever imagine, they still think that he or she is wonderful.” — Roald Dahl

  • “When your mother asks, 'Do you want a piece of advice?' it's a mere formality. It doesn't matter if you answer yes or no. You're going to get it anyway.” — Erma Bombeck
