Motorola Moto G7 Play Revealed By The FCC
In October, the specs for the Motorola Moto G7 were leaked online, revealing that the device will have a larger display. Now, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has revealed the full specs for the less powerful variant, called the Moto G7 Play.
The Moto G7 Play was first spotted on the FCC website by Droid Life. The filings appear to reveal everything about the upcoming device, including photos that show off exactly what what it will look like. The Moto G7 Play is listed with the model number XT1952 and is said to arrive in two colors: black and light blue. The Moto G7 Play appears to have a very familiar Motorola design that comes with curved edges and a huge module on the back housing the single-lens camera. The handset also features an iPhone X-style notch, a rear-mounted fingerprint scanner, a headphone jack, a microSD card slot and a USB Type-C port.
Inside, the Moto G7 Play is powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 632 chipset alongside an Adreno 506 GPU. No information was revealed about the device’s RAM and internal storage. What’s most intriguing about the device is that it will only has a 2,820mAh battery. The Moto G6 Play, which was launched in April, was equipped with a massive 4,000mAh battery.
Decreasing the battery capacity on a newer device isn’t too odd when it comes to Motorola. Earlier this year, the company released the Moto Z3 Play and it came with a 3,000mAh battery, which is 510mAh less than what’s found in the original Moto Z Play. The Verge pointed out that the decision to decrease the battery capacity on the Moto Z3 Play may have been part of Motorola’s strategy to convince more consumers to buy its Moto Mod battery packs.
With the Moto G7 Play, it doesn’t really make much sense that it has a smaller battery capacity than its predecessor. The upcoming handset doesn’t even support Motorola’s Moto Mods. It was leaked in October that the standard Moto G7 will have a 3,500mAh battery, which spawned speculations that the Moto G7 Plus may have a larger 4,000mAh battery. Perhaps Motorola is planning on selling the Moto G7 Play as the cheapest variant with the smallest battery.
Lenovo, which owns the Motorola phone division, hasn’t revealed any information on when the trio of Moto G7 phones will be released. The Moto G6 lineup debuted in the month of April and it’s very likely that the Moto G7 could be announced next year at around the same period. However, it’s a little unusual that a complete FCC listing for the Moto G7 Play is available this early. It’s possible that it could launch earlier than expected, as pointed out by Engadget.
