Jose Mourinho-managed Tottenham Hotspur are reportedly looking to sign Angel di Maria of Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) in the summer of 2021.
Spurs have made a contact with di Maria over a summer move as the forward’s current deal with PSG is due to expire at the end of the 2020-21 campaign, and he’ll be able to join Spurs as a free agent, talkSport reported.
A move to the North London club would reunite di Maria with his former Real Madrid boss Mourinho. It is understood the presence of Mourinho at Spurs could help the club acquire the signatures of the talented Argentinian forward.
Di Maria remains a crucial part of PSG, having started every game under new boss Mauricio Pochettino. Overall, he has started 19 out of the 23 competitive matches he has played for PSG in the ongoing season, scoring four goals and providing 10 assists.
Following four seasons at Real Madrid, di Maria moved to Manchester United ahead of the 2014-15 campaign on a five-year contract for a fee of $82 million -- the highest ever fee paid by a British club at that time. However, di Maria lasted at Old Trafford for only a season, where he had managed just four goals in 32 competitive outings. The forward was sold off the very next season for $60 million to PSG, who signed the player on a four-year deal.
Di Maria, who has been impressed by France, was offered a new three-year deal by PSG in 2018. Having scored 85 goals in 242 matches, across the competitions, di Maria has been a vital cog of the PSG side.
According to the French publication, L’Equipe, at the end of 2020, PSG offered an extension to di Maria but the Argentinian rejected the offer because they did not satisfy his demands after the club proposed a cut to his current wage of $302,000 per week. Since no agreement has been reached between the two parties, the player currently is allowed to hold negotiations with other clubs.
Meanwhile, Pochettino also wants to bring Spurs midfielder, Dele Alli, to the French capital after the player has fallen out of favor under Mourinho. PSG have been heavily linked with a loan move for the 24-year-old playmaker, who was left out of the Tottenham squad for their 4-1 win over Wycombe in the FA Cup fourth round Monday and has not started a Premier League game since being subbed off at half-time in a 1-0 opening defeat to Everton last September.
While Spurs are currently placed sixth in the 2020-21 Premier League table with 33 points in 18 games, PSG are at the top of the Ligue 1 table with 45 points in 21 matches.
