'Mr. Robot' Season 2 Spoilers: Why Is Elliot In Jail? 3 Theories
“Mr. Robot” season 2, episode 7 “eps2.5h4ndshake.sme” revealed the biggest twist so far.
What started out as a continuation of the previous episode ended with a big surprise, albeit one that has been predicted by some fans online. In the beginning of the episode, Elliot (Rami Malek) and Mr. Robot a.ka. Edward (Christian Slater) tried to get to the same point. Elliot has been asking the image of his dead father on his head to let him know what happened the night he executed the hack on E Corp for a while now, and in the last episode, he finally budged.
After asking whether he did it – “it” pertaining to killing Tyrell Wellick (Martin Wallstrom) – Edward finally gave him what he wanted. Finding out that he did kill Tyrell was not enough, so Elliot asked how he did it. Using the gun Darlene (Carly Chaikin) hid in the popcorn machine, Elliot shot the E Corp executive, whom he has been working with for quite some time.
There was also a scene where a group of men was trying to rape Elliot and his friend Leon (Joey Bada$$) came to rescue him, slitting the men's throats with ease and precision. After what he did, Leon revealed to viewers that he works for Whiterose (B.D. Wong).
While that was a shocker, the bigger revelation came at the end of the episode. While speaking to his therapist Krista (Gloria Reuben), Elliot finally admits that he has not been staying at his mother's house, which was what viewers were made to believe in the first few episodes of the season. Elliot, as fan theories suggested, was actually in prison. The biggest question is: Why is he there?
1. For the death of Tyrell
If he were in jail for killing Tyrell, why are people still looking for the latter? His wife, Joanna (Stephanie Corneliussen), has been receiving hints that her husband is still alive and will be in touch with her soon.
2. For the 9/5 hack
If he were captured for the hack, he would not have been thinking about the next step to take anymore and assume that the “revolution” he created with fsociety is already dead.
3. For something else that has yet to be revealed
In the first season, Elliot hinted that his visits were court-mandated, which means it was a condition for something he did. Elliot might already have an outstanding case that has not yet been revealed, and his decision to discontinue his sessions with Krista was equal to breaching his probation or whatever condition was given to him.
The only way to find out is to catch the upcoming episodes. “Mr. Robot” season 2 airs Wednesdays at 10 p.m. on USA.
