MSNBC Host Joy Reid Gets New Show: What Episodes Of 'The ReidOut' Will Bring
Joy Reid has fulfilled a variety of roles since joining MSNBC in 2011, but thanks to a recent promotion her next move will be hosting a new show called "The ReidOut." This marks a departure from her previous show, "AM Joy," which was a political weekend-morning talk show on the network. Previously, the timeslot had been filled by "Hardball with Chris Matthews" prior to Matthews' retirement in March.
The new program, which will premiere July 20 at 7 p.m., will be based in Washington D.C. and will include "one-on-one conversations with politicians and newsmakers while addressing provocative political issues both inside and outside of the beltway," according to a press release.
"ReidOut" will also lean into the host's background as a speaker and draw from her decades-long experience in the political field. Throughout her career, she has also addressed "the intersection of race, justice and culture" through her unique interviewing style, which will now be highlighted five nights each week during the first show in MSNBC's primetime lineup.
Prior to taking on the new role, Reid also lent her talents to other shows on the network, including fulfilling hosting duties on "All In with Chris Hayes," "The Rachel Maddow Show," and others. Additionally, she also covered national stories, such as the Trayvon Martin shooting, the Women's March, and both the Republican and Democratic conventions.
Reid's addition to the nightly lineup coincides with the new vision laid out by Cesar Conde, who was named chairman of NBCU’s News Group in May. In a recent memo, he shared that he is committed to changing the makeup of the staff at NBC News, MSNBC, and CNBC moving forward. As a result, his plans include ensuring that workplaces are more diverse by making sure that 50% are female and 50% are people of color.
When speaking about the upcoming change, MSNBC President Phil Griffin said that he was "thrilled" to add her to the lineup. "She’s thoughtful and brings so much depth to her reporting. She’s made for this moment," he added.
As for Reid herself, she stated that she is "honored and thankful for the opportunity" to host the new MSNBC show.
"I’ll always be proud of the work we did on ‘AM Joy’ by pushing the envelope and tackling pragmatic conversations. I’m eager to carry that same energy into the 7 p.m. hour where we can continue to build on bringing in diverse, smart, and accomplished voices to the table on topics that are important to our viewers," she concluded.
"The ReidOut" will premiere July 20 at 7 p.m. EDT on MSNBC.
