MTV 'Challenge' Winner Let Go After Black Lives Matter Comments, Feud With 'Total Madness' Cast
Don’t expect to see Dee Nguyen in any future seasons of “The Challenge.” According to its official Twitter account, the show has severed ties with the MTV star because of comments she made regarding the Black Lives Matter movement.
The controversy started when Nguyen responded to an Instagram comment about her participation in Blackout Tuesday, a social media campaign designed to promote solidarity with the Black Lives Matter movement. Nguyen then tweeted a joke about Black Lives Matter, and the two posts drew the ire of one of her “Challenge” co-stars.
Bayleigh Dayton made her debut on the MTV series as part of the cast of “The Challenge: Total Madness,” which currently airs every Wednesday night. Dayton called out Nguyen, sparking a war of words between the two on Twitter.
Christopher “Swaggy C.” Williams, Dayton’s husband and part of the “Total Madness” cast, came to his wife’s defense and also went after Nguyen. Williams called Nguyen the “fakest person on the cast by far” and criticized her in a lengthy Twitter thread.
Nguyen issued an apology and announced that she was taking a break from social media to take care of her mental health.
“I am sorry for the insensitive tweet I posted earlier,” Nguyen said. “I was being defensive and not speaking from my heart. But there’s no excuse. I also want to extend an apology to Bayleigh and Swaggy- who are my castmates and deserve my respect and compassion.”
Nguyen made her “Challenge” debut on “War of the Worlds,” where she lasted 14 episodes. Nguyen was one of four winners last season on “War of the Worlds 2.”
Nguyen is currently one of 16 contestants remaining on “Total Madness” through 10 episodes, along with Dayton and Williams. The entire season has already been filmed.
