MTV Video Music Awards: Miley Cyrus Covers Up, Selena Gomez Strips Down [PHOTOS]

Miley Cyrus wowed in her Roberto Cavalli gown at the 2011 VMA on Aug. 28. Selena Gomez dressed to impress as well, but one cannot help but notice the switch of classy versus showy at the award show Sunday night.

Cyrus hit the white carpet in a floor length gown that featured a combination of patterns including floral Japanese prints and tiger stripes. The dress was completely covered in front, fitted around the waist, and back-less. The 18 year-old singer looked elegant in silver jewels and a classy updo. Although the dress was not a hit across the board, many have been complementing Cyrus for her sophisticated and graceful look. The star looked grown-up with out looking over exposed.

Fans on Twitter were both impressed and surprised.

Selena Gomez, on the other had, showed off some skin. The young singer wore a gothic glam dress by Julien Macdonald. It featured lacy details and a flowly train in the back while short in front. Her cleavage was more exposed than ever previously and some wonder if it was too much. Most believe Gomez's dress was beautiful while others felt it didn't quite work for the star.

Gomez has been noted to be wearing less as her popularity has grown. While lately, Miley has been more covered than expected. Gomez has hit the stage in a showy gold showgirl costume during her We Own The Night tour. Not the most scandalous dress ever, but certainly more skin than you would expect from this Disney princess. However, the star claims she is growing up. Her career is developing as she has grown into huge fame in just a few years. I'm still in the phase of transition, Gomez says and claims that she has not reached her full potential. Fans and critics alike only hope that she will remain the serious and classy teen princess we know her to be.

Cyrus has been working on things some might consider... honorable and slightly surprising considering the singer's previous acts of pole dancing and revealing outfits. On July 27, she announced she would be returning to Haiti with the Starkey Hearing Foundation. After I went on my first mission to Haiti with the Starkey Hearing Foundation, I felt so drawn to helping others hear for the first time and immediately wanted to look for another chance to go back and help again, she said in her speech at the Starkley Hearing Foundation Gala.

Cyrus has been showing the world a more mature (in a good way) side to herself with her charity work and under the radar relationship to Liam Hemsworth, who was recently cased in The Hunger Games series along side Josh Hutcherson.
