MTV VMA 2012: Lana Del Rey Snubbed On Best New Artist & Best Pop Video Nominations
Lana Del Rey's "Born To Die" video currently has 57,612,842 hits on YouTube, and it was enough to earn her MTV VMA nominations for Best Cinematography and Best Art Direction, but her fans are upset that she wasn't nominated for Best Pop Video and the coveted Best New Artist title.
Lana Del Rey enthusiasts have been sending out tweets asking why the singer didn't merit a nomination for the top award.
Most people had similar tweets to @MonsterGrillz, who said, "WHY is Lana Del Rey not nominated for Best New Artist?"
The Wanted, who range in age from 19 to 23, and One Direction, ages 18 to 20, are two of the groups who were deemed worthy by MTV of Best New Artist nods. Lana Del Rey is 26, only three years older than the oldest Wanted member, yet some are wondering whether she was shunned because of her age.
@DominicScott said, "The Wanted and One Direction are supposedly better than Lana Del Rey. How embarrassing is @MTV right now? Is this the Kids Choice Awards?"
One diehard fan of Del Rey's wants to host his own show where the artist will win all the awards.
@TEEN_GHOST shared, "im hosting my own award show and lana del rey wins everything except for the dumbest tv channel which goes to MTV."
Lana Del Rey's style is very different from the Wanted and One Direction; while they serve up upbeat pop tunes, Rey's songs are slower ballads with a solemn tone.
But Del Rey's fans might be overzealous in wagging their fingers at MTV. "Born To Die" is not the first album Del Rey has released, in fact, her first album was called "Lana Del Rey A.K.A Lizzy Grant" in 2010 and then she went by the name of Lizzy Grant. So it would actually be unfair to the other artists in the category if she were nominated for the Best New Artist award.
She recently covered Nirvana's "Heart Shaped Box" while at a concert in Sydney and received flak for it from Kurt Cobain's widow, Courtney Love.
Though Del Rey's cover of the song was pretty solid, Love had something to say about it.
NME reported that she tweeted: "You do know the song is about my Vagina right? 'Throw down your umbilical noose so i can climb right back,' umm... On top of which some of the lyrics about my vagina I contributed. So umm next time you sing it, think about my vagina will you?"
But Del Rey probably knew that factoid already, since she had been a fan of Nirvana since she was 11, according to the Huffington Post.
She told a radio show about Cobain last year, "Even at a young age, I really related to his sadness."
Love later seemed to regret her attack on Del Rey, tweeting: "You are gorgeous and very talented, it was all in good humor love, it is true however bwahaa xc."
