MWC 2021: TCL Goes Big With NXTGEAR G Smart Glasses
KEY POINTS
- TCL has translated their knack for displays into a pair of smart glasses that can generate the equivalent of a 140-inch screen
- The NXTGEAR G glasses plug into devices like laptops and cell phones via a USB-C cable
- The NXTGEAR G glasses don't have a price point yet, but should be releasing next month in Australia
TCL as a company is known for its great displays. This is true across their entire television and cell phone line of products. The company is looking to expand their line of displays with the NXTGEAR G, a pair of glasses that has the equivalent of a 140-inch 1080p screen inside them. What’s interesting is that the screen doesn’t just take up the user’s entire vision, as the screen is made to appear like it is four meters away.
To make the NXTGEAR G smart glasses as compatible as possible, the glasses connect to a phone, laptop or computer via a USB-C cable. Once this cable is connected, the NXTGEAR G glasses can be used for anything from watching a movie to playing a game to working. Because the screen is generated by the glasses, it will follow the wearer around wherever they are. That means users will never need to reposition themselves to get a better view.
While we haven’t tried the NXTGEAR G for ourselves just yet, it looks like the smart glasses offer the wearer the ability to see their surroundings while still being able to see the screen. It also looks like the glasses will have their own battery to allow for them to be worn with as little distraction as possible. The glasses will still need to be connected to a source like a phone or laptop regardless.
Based on the pictures and the trailer above, the NXTGEAR G glasses look a little goofy when worn, especially when using the included nose pads. The glasses also look fairly chunky. This makes sense as the glasses also include speakers. The wearer can also connect a pair of earbuds or a headset as well instead of using the built-in audio.
The best part about the NXTGEAR G is that we don’t have to wait very long before having the opportunity to try it out for ourselves. TCL mentioned that the NXTGEAR G will go on sale starting next month in Australia. More global availability will be revealed soon. Unfortunately, no price has been revealed just yet.
