Mysterious Fish Found With Bulbous Eyes, Dinosaur-Like Body Draw ‘Alien’ Comparisons [Photo]

A Norwegian fisherman was left baffled after he reeled in an “alien-like” fish from the deep.

Oscar Lundahl, 19, was fishing for blue halibut, a rare species of fish, off the coast of the island of Andoya recently when he made the unexpected catch that nearly got him to jump out of his boat.

Recalling the incident, Lundahl said, "We were looking for blue halibut which is a rare species about five miles off shore. I had four hooks on one line and felt something quite big on the end of it. It took me about 30 minutes to reel it in because it was 800 meters deep. There were two halibut on two of the hooks and I was really happy about that and then I saw there was something else.”

He then saw the alien-like bizarre-looking fish with “bulbous eyes” on the end of his line.

"It was pretty amazing. I have never seen anything like it before. It just looked weird, a bit dinosaur-like. I didn't know what it was but my colleague did,” he told the Sun.

One of his colleagues informed him that it was a ratfish. The Latin name of the species was Chimaeras Monstrosa Linnaeus which was derived from a “Greek mythical monster that had the head of a lion and tail of a dragon.”

The ratfish did not survive after being reeled out of water due to the change in pressure. Lundahl said he took the fish home and fried it.

"Despite its ugly appearance it was really tasty. It is a bit like cod but tastier,” he said.
