NASA Could Start Zombie Apocalypse In Space: Here's How
Aside from asteroids and solar storms, it seems there’s a new cosmic threat that Earth should be worried about. According to a research, it is possible for NASA to inadvertently start a zombie outbreak from space.
For years, NASA has been carrying out various space missions with different objectives. In some of these missions, samples of viruses and bacteria are brought into space to study how they would react in microgravity.
In some of these experiments, NASA astronauts discovered that certain diseases can become more virulent in space. Based on this idea, the YouTube channel PBS Space Time discussed the possibility of NASA starting a zombie outbreak due to its experiments and missions in space.
According to the video, an outbreak from space is a bit similar to a plot point of “The Walking Dead.”
“In [‘The Walking Dead’], every living person has somehow already contracted the zombie virus which lies dormant until you die,” he said.
“Moreover, blood samples taken from astronauts during various stages of spaceflight show reactivation of dormant viruses that they already carry like chickenpox or the Epstein-Barr virus which causes mono,” he continued. “All of which suggests that viruses also are more virulent in orbit."
As noted by the host Gabe Perez-Giz, it is possible for a dormant virus that has previously infected an astronaut to evolve in space. The new effects and deadlier nature of the virus could then emerge once the astronaut returns to Earth.
If the virus evolves into something that exhibits the symptoms of rabies, which can cause patients to become extremely violent, then it could become a hybrid infectious disease that could kick off the zombie apocalypse.
For now, the number of viruses and bacteria reaching space is a bit contained mainly because only those that will be experimented on are deliberately sent into orbit. Also, NASA quarantines its equipment and personnel before sending them into space.
Unfortunately, with the advent of commercial spaceflight, space will soon become exposed to the regular arrival of hundreds to thousands of people. This means the chances of various types of bacteria and viruses reaching space will be greater. With different types of diseases interacting with one another in space, it seems it is possible for one to evolve into something that’s similar to a zombie virus.
