Internet heartthrob Bobak Ferdowsi, better known simply as "mohawk guy," has received more than his fair share of compliments this week after images of his eccentric hairdo were broadcast during the Mars rover landing, spawning a meme honoring Ferdowsi's hair. But one impressed fan probably stood out above the rest for Ferdowski - President Obama, who called the NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory to personally congratulate them on their successful mission.

In a call to mission specialists on Monday that was broadcast on NASA TV, Obama singled out Ferdowsi's stylish 'do, jesting that he considered sporting one himself, but was dissuaded against it by his aides.

"I, in the past, thought about getting a mohawk myself, but my team keeps on discouraging me," said Obama. "And now that he's received marriage proposals and thousands of new Twitter followers, I think that I'm going to go back to my team and see if it makes sense."

Obama kept up the jest, saying, "It does sound like NASA has come a long way from the white-shirt, black dark-rimmed glasses and the pocket protectors. You guys are a little cooler than you used to be."

On a more serious note, the President congratulated NASA scientists on their hard won achievement. "It's really mind-boggling what you've been able to accomplish," he said. "And being able to get that whole landing sequence to work the way you did is a testimony to your team."

Obama also said that he hopes that NASA's breakthrough will eventually pave the way for a human mission to Mars, sometime in the future.

"What you've accomplished embodies the American spirit," said Obama. "Our expectation is that Curiosity is going to be telling us things that we did not know before," and that the rover will eventually be part of an even more "audacious undertaking," that would include "a human mission to the red planet."

Ferdowsi took to twitter to express his awe and excitement about receiving the call from Obama. "So incredible to have the POTUS call work today & thank the team!," tweeted Ferdowsi on Monday. "Still can't believe @BarackObama called me mohawk guy!"

But the joke didn't end there: Twitter user Darth created a visual guide for what Obama would look like with a Mohawk after another user, Stefan Becket, tweeted, "Is someone going to photoshop the president with a mohawk or do I have to do everything around here."
