NASA Video Shows Massive Hurricane Dorian From Outer Space [Watch]
NASA’s International Space Station (ISS) was able to capture a video of hurricane Dorian from space as it moved towards Florida and the Bahamas during the weekend. Due to the massiveness and strength of the hurricane, the National Hurricane Center (NHC) has issued new storm surge warnings for several areas in Florida.
According to NASA, Dorian, which is already a Category 5 hurricane, is moving west at 7 miles per hour and has maximum sustained winds of around 185 miles per hour. The hurricane’s gusts can reach over 200 miles per hour. The eye of the storm was last spotted over Abacos Islands, a small group of islands and barrier cays east of southern Florida.
In the incredible video captured by the ISS, the massive Dorian can be seen moving across the Atlantic Ocean. The footage terrifyingly shows just how big the hurricane is. At the time the video was taken, Dorian was only a Category 4 hurricane. However, after spending a long time over the ocean, it became bigger and gained more strength.
NASA noted that the storm is expected to move away from the Abaco Islands and the Bahamas by today and will approach the east coast of Florida at around late Monday to Tuesday night.
In preparation for the arrival of the hurricane, the NHC has released a new batch of storm surge warnings and watches as well as hurricane warnings for various areas in Florida. The complete list of warnings and the affected areas can be viewed through NHC’s Hurricane Dorian Public Advisory.
In the advisory, the NHC also warned the public of flash floods and strong waves near the coast.
“A life-threatening storm surge will raise water levels by as much as 18 to 23 feet above normal tide levels in areas onshore winds on the Abaco Islands and the Grand Bahama Island,” the agency stated. “Near the coast, the surge will be accompanied by large and destructive waves.”
“The combination of a dangerous storm surge and the tide will cause normally dry areas near the coast to be flooded by rising waters moving inland from the shoreline,” the NHC added.
