As far as the idea of a perfect dessert goes, nothing can beat an apple pie in terms of taste and versatility. Branded as America's favorite dessert, the sweet confection is a mainstay in almost all the occasions observed here all around the year.

The love for apple pies runs so deep that it came to be linked to the imagery of America. "As American as apple pie," in fact, is a metric with which the American-ness of many things, ranging from a basketball game to a song is judged.

National Apple Pie Day is observed annually on May 13 to honor the simplest yet tastiest dessert in the world. On this occasion, here is a fuss-free and easy Dutch Apple Pie recipe to try at home.(Courtesy: Popsugar)

Ingredients:

  • 1 pie crust (store-bought or homemade)
  • 5-6 cups apples- peeled and sliced into 1/4-inch pieces
  • Lemon juice- 1 tablespoon
  • Light brown sugar- 1/3 cups
  • Granulated sugar- 1/3 cup
  • Flour- 1/4 cups
  • Ground cinnamon- 1 teaspoon

For the topping:

  • Flour- 1 cup flour, 2 tablespoons
  • Granulated sugar- 1/3 cups
  • Light brown sugar- 1/3 cups
  • Cold butter- 1/2 cups, cubed

Method:

  • Preheat the oven to 375°F. Adjust your oven rack in the lowest position
  • Roll out your pie dough to a 12-inch circle and fit it into a 9-inch pie plate, crimping the edges. Place the plate into the refrigerator to chill
  • Take a large bowl and combine the apples, lemon juice, brown sugar, granulated sugar, flour and cinnamon. Make sure that the mixture coats all the pieces evenly. Set it aside
  • To prepare the topping, take a medium-sized bowl and combine the flour, granulated sugar, brown sugar and butter. Blend the mixture using a pastry cutter until a coarse crumb form. Using your hands, squeeze the mixture together until all the butter is absorbed and your crumb topping comes together
  • Take out the pie plate from the refrigerator and spread the apples evenly into the crust, discarding any liquid that has been released from the apples. Sprinkle the crumb topping evenly on the apples
  • Bake the pie for 50-60 minutes until the mixture bubbles from the sides and the crust turns golden. Immediately place a foil atop the pie if it starts to turn golden too quickly. Cook it long enough to make sure there are no raw lumps. The bottom crust is likely to turn soggy as you are cooking raw apples. However, placing the rack in the lowest position and baking the pie for long means the bottom will be baked properly
  • Remove the pie from the oven when done and allow it to come to room temperature before slicing

It is now ready to be served and relished.
