National Black Dog Day is celebrated annually on Oct. 1 as a gesture to encourage the adoption of canines in the darker shades.

Black dogs are often reportedly the last ones to be adopted from shelters and the first ones to be put down in overcrowded shelters, just because of the color of their fur. National Black Dog Day is celebrated annually in order to help break these stereotypes and encourage people to adopt Black dogs.
